Lance also felt somewhat menacing but that's solely because you know he isn't above making his pokémon attack people, really.
Steven and Shirona were kind of a surprise but otherwise I had absolutely no reason to fear them (until the battle actually rolls in) as you never see them fight before.
Now Alder, that guy DOES have a reputation throughout the region and they hype him hard so you at least clench your anus when fighting him (too bad we couldn't get a proper climax with him thanks to N). Iris was more of a "gotta trust Alder's judgement" case.
And then there's Diantha.
