Good addition in that it gives a few mon a much needed boost.
Misstep in that they give it to a few mon that doesn't need it.

I thought they were great. as I was always a huge fan of "super forms". Competitive was never my focus, so the fact that they boosted already strong Pokemon didn't really bother me.

Mega should've been used to buff weak mons into somewhat viable mons like Beedrill, Pidgeot, Mawile, Kangaskhan, Lopunny, Banette etc.
They really didn't need to give Mega to already viable mons like Pseudos, Lucario, Rayquaza, Scizor, Gengar

I disliked the idea when they first announced it but it grew on me. One major issue is that it gave an unecessary powerboost to Pokemon that didn't need it but it sort of made sense that they'd give it to popular Pokemon from a marketing perspective. Also, if they continued with the idea every generation then Game Freak would have been forced to eventually start giving mega evolutions to the more niche Pokemon that actually needed the boost more. However, they decided to scrap the idea in gen 7 so now they just remain a poorly-executed idea that bloats the player's bag with a bunch of items.
