Are you honestly trying to tell me that Salamence is based on Devilman?
That’s fucking ridiculous, I’ve been a Devilman fan since the fucking garbage ovas, if everything with red wings is a Devilman reference then every backwards facing turtle is a Jinmen reference.
Yeah the 70s tv show is a kids show, but why would they reference something so out dated in 2001(?) when ruby and sapphire came out and all the Devilman kids were well in their 30s?

There was renewed interesting in Devilman in the late 90s thanks to Devilman Lady, so there was a lot of merchandise of him going around for the next several years. That's why a bunch of Devilman spin-offs and the OVA came out around that time. It was still pretty fresh in the public's mind.

Gastly, Haunter and Ganger take their appearance from the Cheshire Cat in C.S. Lewis’s “Alice” books. Gastly is just the face of the cat, Haunter is the cat partially visible, and Ganger is the full grinning cat. Unfortunately Mega Ganger was designed by an idiot and ruins this concept.

I heard it was based off of goku. Common comparisons being...well... He's basically goku in smash, since sakurai couldn't actually put goku in smash.. So not really canon, but, Luke's final smash in brawl is basically a Kamehameha. As well as them sharing the same english VO in most of its appearances.

The Infernape line is Chinese Goku. Lucario just draws from common chi-wielding imagery and happens to be voiced by Goku in English.

The Devilman parallel seems pretty locked, though, neat.

I don't know how many of these are legit, so take these with a grain of salt:
Glalie can not only be a dirty snowball with a hockey mask, but also there's a good chance it's based off of Getter 1's head.
Shiny Mega Gardevoir reminds me of Mazinger, and can shoot beams from her crest.
Tyranitar is obviously Godzilla. Though Pupitar makes me think of Hedorah a little.
I'm still adamant about Machamp being based off of Kinnikuman, but a monsterous version.
Barbarnicle looks somewhat like Garadubla.
Nidoking/queen are based off of Baragon.
Shinx is a bit reminiscent of Kimba.
Yanmega reminds me of those dragonfly creatures in Nasica and the Valley of the Wind.
Not only that, but Eevee reminds me of the little cute mammal she befriends early on in the movie.
Nosepass is of course reminiscent of Mario, and of course the easter island heads.
Deoxys makes me think of the Angels from NGE.
Purrloin looks a bit like Mrs. Dronio from Yattaman.
A few of the moth pokemon take inspiration from Mothra, with Larvesta and Volcarona feeling like they take most of their designs from her.
Pangoro takes inspiration from the often used bancho character type.
Vikavolt's color and eyes make me think of Senketsu from Kill la Kill, though Golisopod is straight up Blade Regalia II.
Salazzle reminds me of Juri from Street Fighter, and Mega Lopunny a mix between Chun Li and Cammy.
Turtonator feels inspired by Jiren.
Sugaleo might have a bit of Galeon in him.
