You get a nice selection of early mons in GoD. Mareep, Spheal, teddiursa and shroomish are at the start; with Makuhita, ralts, Roselia and Growlithe not too far behind.

And it's gen 3 so even shit tier Mons are still fairly decent There's an altaria later on that's pretty tanky despite being sans roost.

Some of my favs that I've used:

Dusclops, Ampharos, Dewgong, Hariyama, Ninetales, Claydol, Arcanine, Tyranitar (won't evolve into Tyranitar until Citidark Isle probably), Glalie (same issue), Sharpedo

I've used it on every playthrough, and it's become one of my all-time favorite pokémon.
The one in XD gets access to Heat Wave, which is great in the doubles format and doesn't happen again till gen 6.
