I know I previously called them simplistic, but what if that's the point?
During Gen 6, I'm pretty sure one of the higher ups from Pokemon/Gamefreak stated that they want to return to a more simplistic approach for Pokemon. Gen 7 came around and they were no more simplistic than gen 6. However, it's likely that the Gen 7 starters and other mons had already been designed at that point and they were getting ready to begin work on Gen 8 for the Switch (It would have been around this time that Nintendo would have told its major game branches that a new console was almost ready for development). Therefore their more simplistic approach philosophy would have started with Gen 8, hence these starters (which could very well fit with the Sri Lankan leaks from yesterday and as someone else has said, you can't design starters over night if they are related, unless of course they were created along side the "leaks")
All in all, this is most likely fake but there is a simplistic charm to these designs even if I would prefer a bit more detail in my starters
