Would a Pokemon game built like BOTW work? Assuming that Pokemon don't break after using them a handful of times.

The only qualities of BotW I would apply to Pokemon would be a big 3D map to freely explore, and weather changes. What else?

If they want to take the lack of story and handholding from BotW, that would be great. I can't believe people want more open world games though. It has ruined many games and wasted so many hours, where a simple fun quest in an older game becomes a chore of walking in new games, and after 2 hours of gameplay your only accomplishment is "well I found and completed 1 shrine"

Not every game is made for open world, but pokemon definitly is
The whole concept behind pokemon is adventure, travel and freedom

Yes but only if they get rid of the level system and make it pure action combat. And to gamefreak's eyes, removing those isn't pokemon (or just too much work for them).

I feel like a pokemon ranger style game could work amazingly in a massive open world, with a loose story and lots of open quests, also dynamic leveling and scaling based on xp, so you could do different stuff in different orders
