They've said the easiness of the last few games is because they're competing with phone games so it needs to be accessible to those without time, but now that the next gen will be for a home console I think their philosophy could use a change.
I'm not talking bastard hard, but even making just the gym leaders actually challenging boss fights would make me very happy. Give them an AI that will think to switch out for a better type match up, use weather effects, a poison gym leader should set up toxic spikes turn 1, etc. If they're concerned about kiddies still having a bad time, which is a legitimate concern for their audience, then there should either be an in depth advice system ("Oh you lost to Rocky? Well try catching grass and water types like X, Y, Z, on routes 1 and 2!) or have difficulty options at the beginning and emphasize that the "challenge mode" is only for experienced trainers or whatever. I know this is probably a long shot, but I just hope my wish comes true enough that I'll actually worry about fighting a leader or boss rather than know I'm just gonna be mashing A as fast as possible.
I also think multiplayer with a single cart would be amazing. Buying two handhelds is a more reasonable expectation than two home consoles so some way to play with friends and family with each using a joy con would be nice. Being able to battle between saves on different profiles on the system would be nice, but even something as simple as being able to both create a battle tower teams to go against eachother or do co-op double battling would be so cool. Hell, having a dedicated area for two players to run around and battle with premade teams would be perfect for it being on a home console so siblings or friends at your house could just drop in and play without having to have their own save. They have to realize the differences between a handheld and console
