Haven't played any of the newest gens but have they fixed the retarded moves NPC Trainers use instead of a confirmed kill on your mon? For example a Venusaur not using Razor Leaf on your Squirtle

Different trainers have different AI. Early trainers and classes like pre schoolers are retarded but it's intentional. Endgame trainers and leaders etc will use appropriate moves and even switch when at a disadvantage. If you're looking for an actual challenge, though, the story modesl is still pretty easy. The endgame arenas are the only real challenges.

Most npc trainers (not gym leaders or any other high AI npc) still intentionally use weaker move to prevent killing you sometimes.

in older games at least the battle facilities kinda rig the rules (RNG is calculated in advance, which you can notice if you use save states I can tell this from experience)
