How do I not be shit at smogon?

Over about 500 battles I have a roughy 50% win rating. Like 90% of that has been in the past. I don't know what the hell I'm doing

Learning how to play & predict your opponent is not that hard, but you probably still believe that you can win with your favorites or that using original movesets & builds is a good idea, don't.

Probably. I am too caught up in the builds and movesets. I basically change my team every few fights now

I used to be good at predicting, but people figure out standard tricks way too quickly. I don't know how to git gud

Here's my sage advice op: play random battles untill you learn how and when to predict. You don't have to worry about matchups and the meta, because that shit is random for you and your opponent. Once you feel comfortable playing random battles, move on to your preferred format. Just don't pick up shitty habits from playing randoms.

Are the players you're trying to predict throwing out bad options? If they do it's prolly cause they're shitters. It may get easier as you get higher in the rankings. Also you just have to learn to deal with rng. Yeah it sucks but if you can't deal with it pokemon is not the game for you.

I think my instincts are mostly geared towards high-1200s

Low ranking players make moves so retarded I can't possibly predict them. High ranking players know what I'm planning and counter accordingly

Also, I have a habit of getting fucked by walls and water types

When going for a predict against a higher ranked player (if you can tell, basically if they're not a shitter) always ask yourself if your predict would be obvious if you were in your opponents position. Also if your having trouble with walls and water types, you may be a more offensive player. Toxic is your friend against things that can be poisoned. Also walls can't really do stuff to other walls, at least in my experience, so if you're struggling against something bulky and are out of options, try a bulky mon yourself. You may have to sacrifice something by using it for chip damage in dire situations. But just like with all things, you can only get better with practice, so try not to get discouraged.
