Gen 2 has the best story of any Pokemon game. Gen 1 has barely a story, Gens 3, 4 and 6 play too much into the "saving the world" thing and Gens 5 and 7 play out like a stereotypical anime. All Gen 2 is about is a story set 3 years after the events of Gen 1 and have follow-ups to Team Rocket, Red, Kanto Gym Leaders, etc.. And all you really have to save is the Goldenrod Radio Tower from being hoisted by Team Rocket. There's a story, but it's not intrusive, the stakes aren't set unrealistically high and it makes all sorts of references to the events of Gen 1
