Since there was no precedent for a set group of types, yet, I think they may have added types in once a lot of pokemon were made, so they had to retrofit types onto a lot of pokemon look just ambiguously purple or creepy or menacing, in addition to actually poisonous types.
It was the Dark Type of generation 1.
