>>34892224>The StoryMost 3D games give you the option top skip story cutscenes and just get along with your game. The story portion of Pokemon games has never really been the big draw; it's the catching and fighting. Gen 1 and 2 had more subdued stories, but they've become more elaborate following gen 3. Gen 6 and 7 have gone the furthest...and haven't given any option for players who want to skip it and just get to the fighting. It's even worse when you're given dialog options that have zero impact on the game.
>Competitive PlayThe entire way Pokemon function stagnates a game with hundreds of monsters to only 10 or so that you can actually use when fighting anyone outside of the story. New Pokemon and mechanics have been introduced to disrupt one aspect of competitive play, but then they get warped in and the meta ends up revolving around them instead. The introduction of the Fairy Type, Mega Stones, the Tapus, and Z-Crystals all stare the same problem. And then you have the nightmare of raising competitive Pokemon in the first place, with egg moves, IVs, natures, etc. which can alienate people trying to get started.
>Unobtainable PokemonWhat is the point of locking certain Pokemon behind events, or keeping certain Pokemon in game from being shiny? Literally nothing except to force players to wait for Gamefreak to benevolently give it out for some event. It's forced engagement, and it's not fun. And that's just mythicals; there are tons of Pokemon you can't obtain in SM or USUM, some you can't get the Hidden Abilities for at all anymore between gens 3 through 7, and some Pokemon you can only get through in-game gifts and therefore can't catch in a ball you like (even though NPCs can).
>DifficultyThe difficulty of any Pokemon game is either "yawn" or "holy fuck what". There's no in between, and no difficulty options for the player. Not even fan games have been able to fix this.
There are more, but I'm tired. I'm sure you can start identifying more.
