RS made you realize how bland Gen 1 really was. When RB came out on the Gameboy, it was amazing because of how innovative it was in so many ways. Catching dinosaurs and having them battle each other, going to distant lands on foot or bike, gambling/fishing/flying, having the snotty rich kid annoy you on the way, trading with friends over the link cable (which was barely used on the gameboy before Pokemon). The player is supposed to be you, but he has much more freedom than normal 10 year old boys could possible have. And he became a hero and legend in his own lifetime.
FRLG didn't introduce anything like that. It was the same game with updated graphics and Gen 2/3 stuff mixed in, which pissed me off.
Gamefreak pissed me off further by reconning "Ash" out of the series, to be replaced by FR/LG Red. The Mt Silver encounter was one of the most iconic, epic experiences in Pokemon history. And they retconned it.
On, there was also bitching about how it should have been FireRed and MistBlue, Leaf Green was random if you didn't know the originals.
