Buzzwole is a big attacker mosquito, Pheromosa is a beautiful cockroach, Nihilego is a hard glass jellyfish, Kartana is a deadly strong piece of paper... just going off of what Ohmori and Turner said, anyway. We can speculate on the others (industrial tree, violent entertainer, big bulky princess, etc.) but the point is that they're supposed to be high contrasting things.
Guzzlord seems to be the exception, as Turner basically just wanted to design an abomination, and he cited Lovecraft and the Hitchhikers Guide books as inspiration.
