Anime in general has been increasingly more difficult to turn a profit on outside of Japan because of the prevelancy of piracy. They largely have to rely of merch sales to turn a profit, hence why waifu bait shows exist everywhere.
Of course, most people only pirate because anime CDs are ungodly expensive. One season of 13 episodes with only a handful of bonus features can run you about $70.
But it's only that expensive because no one buys them
But no-one buys them because they just pirate it.
It's a vicious cycle.
