It was in Gen 2. HGSS were too bright and the music was too bouncy, plus it had Gen 4's shit engine. I'm playing VC Crystal at the moment and enjoying it way more than HGSS.

huh? Gold was pretty lengthy for a gameboy game that nearly maxed out the gameboy's space. Even a glitchless speedrun of it can go under 3 hours, which is just 2 hours less than that of Sun and Moon.

Gen 4 had that slow engine, I need to go fast if I'm gonna relax, capiche?
just to think following Pokemon slowed down the fps even more than necessary makes my blood boil

I'm playing VC Crystal and I can definitely feel the speed in battles compared to Gens 3 and 4. It's not Gen 5 fast but it's faster.
