It's just a fact that some games age better than others. Later games may render earlier ones obsolete, or they may not. Some games have flaws that could be overlooked at the time, but become more glaring compared to later games; some games don't. So yes, it's entirely possible for a game to have been fantastic for its time, but "shit" now. And it's also possible for a game to have been fantastic for its time and remain great today.
Games like Tetris or Super Mario Bros. stand up against the test of time. Pokemon Red/Blue, sadly, don't really do so. That's not to say that we should collect and destroy every copy. They still have nostalgic and historic value, and people can and should still play them. But yeah, they're kind of shit.
