This, Colo&GoD look great, though reusing the Stadium2 models for gen 1 & 2 Pokemon looks shit compared to the new gen 3 models they made. Honestly it's probably just the higher resolution though, and not trying to emulate a pixel style.

Also the three fangame screenshots in the bottom left, from Pokémon Garnet, were made in photoshop. They never put out any evidence that a game was ever even worked on. No demo, no videos, just a bunch of """screenshots"""

3D has always sucked. Even when they did the pseudo-3D sprites in gen 4 and 5, it looked like shit.
I suspect it comes down to the artists working on the games, limitations of the handhelds, and the amount of pokemon. Games like Pokken show that pokemon can look great in 3D, but it has to be done by the right people under the right circumstances

Sprites don't become magically easy to create just because graphics get better. It would be extremely hard to animate that many sprites and make them look good (they looked absolutely hideous in gen 5, with the limbs looking like they weren't even attached to the body a lot of the time), but once you make a model, animating it isn't too hard.

Models can look pretty good too, hopefully down the line the actually work on improving the shittier ones though

The models themselves aren't bad (for the most part).
The REAL issue is lazy fucking animation.
I can accept the sprites not being animated (animated sprites in 5 look like shit despite loving B2W2), but the lack of "charm" in the 3Ds game's pokemon animations are awful.
It's why Coliseum and other 3D games look good, the Pokemon aren't half-assed.

The overworld feels smaller and the models look gay. Sprites were charming. Also, the games have gotten a little too kawaii anime-ish. Before gen 5 the games had a bit of Japanese culture. After gen 5 they now have faggy anime tropes.

The 3D models just seem so putrid even though there's clearly a ton of work put into them.
Translating the Sugimori art coloring to 3D makes Pokemon's coloring look badly washed out. But I think the real offense are the poses and animations Pokemon have, they're just all so stiff and lifeless at times. Most flying Pokemon have basically been ruined and other pokemon just do a generic stance animation and their attacking and receiving damage animations feel so flaccid.
Really, they're just too by-the-numbers.
On the other hand, the models from Stadium/Colosseum/PBR are all dynamic, the Pokemon feel more "alive" for lack of better word. Some Pokemon move around a lot in their generic stand and when they attack it feels like they're really attacking, same for taking damage.

It really goes to show how much of a difference presentation makes as to why many people like the Stadium/Colosseum/PBR models more despite them not looking anywhere near as well-made as the Gen 6-7 ones. And I think if Gen 6-7's models acted at the very least more dynamic, they would be much more well received.

Nah Gen 5's overworld had top tier aesthetics especially when it came to the different seasons.
If you're talking about what was in it then it was still great because it was both linear but had a fuck ton of exploration so people that wanted less backtracking but didn't want to lose the dungeon crawling were satisfied

It's a combination of nostalgia and more dynamic camera angles, along with better resolution, as to why people think Stadium/Colleseum/Battle Revolution looks better than the models on the 3DS

While the right model does have slightly better proportions, the model, or rather textures on the left look better. The yellow and red on Blaziken's feathers blend together nice instead of having a thick outline between them, and the hands and eyes actually have some texture to them, while on the right the entire model is just featureless solid colors with painted on eyes.

First 251 models were directly exported from Stadium, and the Gen 3 pokemon were made with the same style and polycount safe for a few exceptions.

Then what was the point. Nothing about using 2D graphics was inherently bad for those companies. The problem was the sprite art in their games was so high quality that it took them forever to make them, and few people had the skill to do it. It was taking SNK 6 months to make a single character. That's not remotely comparable to anything Gamefreak has done, unless you're implying they would have needed improve to that level if they were going to keep using sprites. Which I doubt since their games have always been significantly behind the curve graphically than other games on the same systems.

It's not the models themselves, it's just how awful the textures are.
If they were shaded correctly and given sharper edges instead of weird blurry lines (like the ones on blaziken's arms) for contours they'd look a lot better.

For example take pic related. Zekrom on the left is from Pokepark 2, right is X+Y.
Left is clearly a lot better because the textures are on point, and they fit the model.
Anyone with eyes can see the one on the right is a shitty, awful mess of a texture just slapped onto a zekrom model, I even suspect they recycled the model itself.

Only it isn't the model that 3DS can't deal with, it's the textures and lightning.

Also, no, a slider won't fix shit because if poly count is too high, the framerate will suffer no matter how much you scale it.

Dot/Sprite based graphics aren't as "free" as you'd believe. We probably would have bigger gaps between Pokemon games and higher resolutions can work more against than for the developer's favor.
