We do know the series was produced with a much greater awareness of its being a global show later in life so that's a reason from the horse's mouth. Standards in Japan and the series first writers (as opposed to later ones) doubtless have hands in it too.

The original series was weird. Real animals, guns, etc. So much odd stuff in the pokemon world that got ignored with every new season afterwards. Pic related is still the biggest one to me though

The reason you rarely see guns in pokemon is to avoid the possiblity of a lawsuit

They don't want a situation where a beyond stupid six year old from the ghetto tries to act out a scene from the show involving a gun in front of a cop and getting a torso full of lead

I always thought Pokemon were metaphors for guns in the games. that's why the villains almost always back off when the kid hero beats them, because with their pokemon fainted the implication is the kid can just kill him to save the world.

The 90s were all about regulation. TV stations had to air educational programming and original animation could no longer be supported by ads for toys of the show that was airing. They got by with dubbing Japanese cartoons for cheap in a broom closet but even that got too expensive as cable (with no real regulations) drained viewership.

At the same time parents groups were calling for action on violence and sex on TV, movies, and video games. Those all resulted in new ratings systems or tiers. To play it safe 4kids made all the dub edits they're famous for.

Short answer: Pokemon world was a lot less developed back in 1996, so things like animals, crosses and guns weren't so out of place because back then, Pokemon's world was just the real word with magic animals.

As late as Black and White they were at least shown using bazookas and I'm pretty sure Ash did a hand gun talking about a Pokemon version of a Clint Eastwood film.

I think it's just there are more than 800 Pokemon now so it's not as hard to pair off a trainer with a much more effective fire breathing creature instead of using a gun.

Guns do exist, as do all the other things from our world. Of course, you dodn't see them, because it's a kid's show. Main games tend to not stray too far from our technology, pokeballs and pc storage system aside, but if you count orre/gc games as cannon, then hover based vechicles also seem somewhat common in the pokemon world, and cipher goons wear power armor.

All of this implies to me that even if somebody had a gun on them, that wouldn't mean much i this world. a 10 yr old can tame a dragon, what is a bullet gonna do to that? and everyone can carry pokemon in this world, you don't see an shootings in the same sense you wouldn't see any shootings in our world if literaly everyone would be allowed to carry a gun
