And Cyndaquil is referred to as a mouse in Japan no matter if it's a hedgehog, shrew, or echidna, all are called mice, and its Japanese species name is hinezumi, with "nezumi" meaning mouse. Additionally, nobody at gamefreak knew they were going to need a pattern until at earliest gen 3, which can be proven by Honoguma. This means that they decided on the pattern in gen 3 and that's why Cyndaquil is the least accurate to fit.
Fennekin looks equally like a chihuahua and a fox. I know what a fennec fox is, but growing up I and many others didn't know the difference between foxes and dogs any more than the difference between dogs and wolves or dogs and coyotes. It's disingenuous to believe that two stretches and something exceedingly similar to a dog disproves the theory. Allows doubt, sure, and you don't have to believe it, but it doesn't disprove it outright.
