There's quite a few side modes that let you do other things, like Pokemon Amie/Refresh, the Alola Photo Club, Contests, Pokeathalon, Unova's Musical, and maybe more I can't remember off the top of my head. Granted, those are all pretty minor, but at least they let you do things with your Pokemon other than battle.
