Pokemania made playing pokemon cool and fun. You could go anywhere and likely find someone to play and battle against. Gen 3-4 were the desolate period, where playing pokemon was seen as uncool.

Pokemon is a social game, and gen 1 and 2 provided the most opportunity to fully exploit those things.

Pokemania made that generation. The new games just touching things up here and there doesn't mean shit, when the environment around pokemon was at an all time high during gen 1.

Only gen 3 was a desolate period if I recall. Given I was still in elementary to middle school from Gen 4 to 5 as opposed to the older original demographic who probably grew up around the time they were a thing, I can safely say there was a major spike in pokemon reinterest and popularity.

more people at my high school when XY came out were playing pokemon with each other than people that played pokemon in grade school during gen 2-5 for some reason. I think a lot of people picked up XY because they got nostalgia baited by the balls with mega evolution but still, people were playing it socially a lot.

i'd assume thered be even more people playing sun and moon due to pokemon go? so i figure by the time gen 10 comes around people will be saying gen 6-7 was the golden age.

lets be real the pokemon fanbases majority opinion is entirely nostalgia/hype

DPPT was pretty unpopular during hoenn remake hype, now that we have "sinnoh remake hype" platinum is suddenly everyones favorite game.

right now gen 5 is unpopular in the majority of the pokemon fanbase but once gen 4 remakes happen and everyones asking for BW remakes itll be everyones favorite.

Haha no. All of those games were loved when they were fresh from the oven, especially XY and SM. BW was hated right off the bat, and the anime didn't even helped its cause. Despite the shitstorm USUM got, Gen 5 will remain as the most unpopular generation in the franchise

Yeah either DP or RSE are the most reliably hated I think. Platinum soars way above it's two prequels though to being one of the best overall games in the franchise. And maybe you'll get one or two Emerald lovers like me but Gen 3 was just really overall weak with many.

BW2 was made because of the hate for BW. They knew they couldn't get away with a regular third version so they had to actually fix the shit people were complaining about and release split versions for extra shekels.
