A more open-ended world (not necessarily open world, but more like gen 1's freedom to challenge the gym leaders past Misty in the order of your choosing. Basically less railroading), and a story that can be supported by such a world. Gives you the chance to explore then start the story when you want to.

More interesting supporting characters (especially the professors) with more depth. Preferably if they develop during the story. The SM supporting characters were on the right track, but not there yet.

And have the legendaries be integrated into the story better than "oh no! X legendary is going to kill us all unless you catch it!". BW got this one right with you having to duel the other legendary.

This and also put more emphasis on exploring and experimenting with the overworld to get to obscure areas or find rare Pokemon. Like let the player character swim or climb small distances by themselves, but if you want to go across a full body of water or climb somewhere high you need certain Pokemon to do it (intrinsically, not with an HM). And add things like in Pokemon Snap where you needed to experiment in weird ways with the environment to get rare Pokemon to show up.

This franchise has potential for fun innovative gameplay but they're squandering it by releasing what is essentially the same game ad nauseam and making each new game even more linear than the previous.

Revamp the battle, stats, and progression systems.

Quit the tradition of letting you bring your previous game's pokemon over and only bring back a very select few that fit the region's theme so that more depth can be put in each one in the next game.

Some kind of extensive system that allows you to go earn badges in whatever order you feel like, with the trainers and gym leaders scaling along with you. Each gym leader can have a signature mon that will always be in the team, and depending on your progress it will be a higher level/evolved and accompanied by one or two or three mons of that gyms type.

Like say you choose rock type leader to be your first challenge, then they could have an Onix and a couple Geodudes. But if it were your 4th Challenge it would be a Steelix, a couple Gravelers and a Nosepass.
And if it were your last challenge, you'd get Steelix, 2 Golems and Probopass. Obviously more thought would go into it if it were actually being implemented, that's just a rough example. And then they could cram whatever story in there after each succesive gym badge earned or something.

Something like that would be cool and make it look like GF were putting effort into their games.

Remove all 802 existing Pokemon and start fresh. Remove mega evolutions. Make actual good monster designs again. No more floating inanimate objects and no more taking animals and slapping on some animu eyes and a bunch of random vibrant colors (put Nishida in charge, she's responsible for almost every good design and Sugimori is washed up). More little girls. Add a difficulty setting. Encourage and reward exploration.

I had this crazy idea with this like huge human created region with 300 or more Pokemon designed solely for the enjoyment of trainers like in January your professor invites you to join the challenge so as a trainer you start over and by December there's the league you can participate if you got 8 badges from the 12 gyms (can challenge them all and get all 12 why not?) to choose from.

All stuff they left behind is brought back like poke walking and shit but its all optional.

Also challenge, lunatic and nuzlocke modes.

There's a battle city with all the battle facilities, a Pokemon raising/breeding city and a contest city.

Bad team is trying to take control of the region and there's this legendaries running wild and wrecking havoc which need to be stopped.

Exp share is exactly what would entail a harder difficulty mode. If you can raise wild Pokemon to your party’s levels quicker, it can allow them to make battles more difficult

you battle trainers more than once. there are no generic trainers, but one of each type who develops as you do. I was thinking you could do a similar thing with wild pokemon fleeing more readily so that they can mature and evolve in the wild and oppose you as a nemesis. every pokemon you battle should be mysterious of typing and of moveset. I'd remove HMs and allow the player to progress freely through the world by swimming or taking ferries, so as to imply that the pokemon are imagined.

Take the original Red/Green/Blue, update the graphics, new region, new pokemon, new gyms, and new elite 4. For the n*ggers who don't shut up until they ruin a game they can add all the modern "fixes" like no HMs, infinite TMs, 100+ hour post-game, and easy competitive pokemon.

It's the core series. All the filler should be it's own spin-off. Imagine a standalone, full featured, Pokemon Amie.
