I was actually think about this the other day. I’m wondering if I’m spoiled by newer games like Black and white 2, but I kinda hate crystal. It’s a shame too since it was my favorite Pokémon game when I was a kid. It got me into Pokémon.
I personally get really bored when I get to olivine city. I think the problem is that there aren’t any good dialogue cues to lead you in any specific direction at this point in the game. You end up backtracking a shit trying to find your way. You need to search pretty hard for surf and strength which are both mandatory. Like I hated getting to Chucks gym only to have to backtrack to Olivine city just to find strength since I had no real reason to go into that stupid restaurant. It wasn’t visually different from the other pointless buildings in the city, so I just skipped it. I mean sure it’s probably a bit on me for being impatient. But I just feel as if the fun grinds to a vault around here. All the wild Pokémon from this point on are level 20. This mean I have to grind tirelessly if I want to get my whole team to a level on par with Clair and the Elite 4. I will admit that it gets more fun around the lake of rage but still. It feels needlessly long here.
Plus I really really hate how you can’t get the evolution stones until Kanto. Oh and on top of that I hate that I can’t catch Slugma, or houndour until kanto. What’s the point of introducting them if you can’t use them??
Those are just personal things.
I think it’s better than gold and silver. Buuut I think that almost all of the games that came after it are better. (X & Y excluded for being kids games on baby mode) I’d even go as far to say that red, blue, and yellow are better too.
