Haven't used Riolu, but Reversal is actually useful in PMD and Screech is good for linking.
Shinx eventually gets Discharge which is nice and has two alright abilities. Note that all Pokémon on odd floors are male and even floors are female. Linking Charge and Electric moves is good too.
Turtwig gets draining moves which are fun, can also buff with Withdraw for a bit more bulk. Would probably be more effective as a leader.

Though of course it's still a Pokémon game so you'll be fine with whatever.

Have fun OP, and here's hoping for a new PMD on Monday.

Thanks for the answer.

Shinx looks like an amazing starter Pokemon. Thunder Wave for bosses. Discharge for Monster Houses. Reliable Spark. Thunderbolt and Shock Wave for AOE and range respectively.
Still, I really want it as my partner. Seems more appropriate to me (maybe because of these well-made expressive portraits).

I'm torn between Riolu and Turtwig as a leader.

I've played EoT like 7 years ago and I don't remember how long after credits do you have to wait for evolution. Riolu seems kinda boring until it evolves.
