Starter pokemon are one of the most common fakemons on the web, and yet somehow most of them are "off". How the fuck does Game Freak do it? I've been staring at this picture for a few minutes and they all just "feel" like pokemon. Turtwig, Piplup, and Popplio are the most fakemon-like to me, but even still they have something official about them.

They all have to be cute and relate to the fully evolved forms without spoiling the line right away. When you're presented your choice of the three starters each generation, it's their intention that they are all interesting and mysterious but still defined enough that you can make a confident choice and be happy as you progress with them on your team.

Fake starters are often either too simple, not showing any potential for an underlying theme, or too complex, giving away too much of the concept of each starter.

There's been a definite shift in design philosophies over the generations. For example Fennekin would stick out like a sore thumb if you tried to pass it off as a leak around gen 1/2, but today it feels like a pokemon.

the fact that you're used to it, have seen them in motion and in battle, and the fact that nintendo gets artists who can make designs that are just similar enough in style to all be consistent with the starting point (gen 1).
You're just familiar, if I saw the Lemur/Rabbit/Platypus combo in-game and animated by Nintendo, any doubt I had about their validity would disappear.

yeah, same. the style has shifted over the generations but it's really noticeable starting after gen 4. the colours are much more saturated, the heads are generally bigger compared to the bodies, the shapes are way simplified (like round ended limbs in most of the pst gen 4 ones and actual claws and fingers on mst of the gen 4 bd earlier ones), and all the details like eyes are waaay more simple, mostly just circles or circles in circles now. they're all way more babylike and cutesy. the first few gens looked like little monsters, like animals, the new ones have huge eyes and tiny mouths. and with the evos they've trended gradually from dangerous looking monsters towards humanoid with really distinct characterisation, seems like they were made with the anime in mind.

The designs still look fake. It's something about the way that Sugimori draws the starters that seemingly nobody can properly imitate.

rabbit is clearly a poorly made fakemon, one of the worst fakemon, i still don't understand how people managed to believe in that crap cute, literally from deviantart, not pokemony at all. the eyes were totally souless for a starter. the beige colour doesn't harmonize with the other colours in it.

platypus was away detailed in shapes, the beak was too detailed, and overall, it was too cutesy-detailed and not pokemony.

I mean, I disagree that they look fake, so that's a moot point. But yeah, of course there's a difference, after 23 years it's to be expected, I don't think Pokémon would have survived the way it has without change, but I disagree that artwork not done by Sugimori just looks more fake. Different =/= Fake

the lemur was fantastic, yeah the rabbit is very soulless and bland, and the platypus seems more like gen 1 with the detail in the beak shape and the body. i still wish they were real cos, barring the rabbit, i like them more than anything from recent gens

I mean, I see what you mean. Rabbit had eyes similar to Alolan Raichu though, so that makes it more believable to me. Honestly, to me what makes me sceptical is that their outer linework just seems too.. thin? I don't do that kind of art, so I don't know the technical term, but it's most apparent on the Platypus, it just feels like the black lines should be a little thicker.

The linework was obviously digital, which should have tipped everyone off from the beginning. I doubt GF wouldn't hand-draw the starters for their reference sheets.

Ignoring obvious things like art style, the single most important thing in any Pokemon design are the eyes. The recognition of eyes is something hard-coded into just about every animal on the planet, and to such an effect animals constantly make fake eyes with something on their body usually to trick or scare off predators. If you can't make the eyes look GameFreak and have them fit with the Pokemon then you're at an instant loss. Expression in the eyes can also be a dead giveaway depending on whether the eyes are too dynamic or not dynamic enough to again fit with the design presented.

now look those 2 foxes together, they don't match at all, but is the mix between all styles in every pokemon that makes each one match the overall. maybe they don't match separately, but for sure fennekin matches with x pokemon, that matches with y pokemon, that matches with n pokemon, that matches with vulpix that matches with....
They all feel connected and part of the same nature. Gen1 mon are the ones who feel a bit off after 7 gens, if they don't start to add more gen1 style into their new mons, gen1 will feel off and fake.

What specifically? The nitty gritty is spot on with the line jitter and more realistic proportions. To me, these look like something Sugimori could have drawn.
