Why does it not occur to so many of you that Gamefreak might have started development before Sun and Moon's release date? Or that Nintendo might have other teams helping them like how Monolith Soft helped out EAD for Breath of the Wild?

it would double the time for gamefreak to come up with a complete product as suppose to a normal develover, also even if they started the project around sun/moon these years would've still mostly spent working on the engine and porting data from the latest games

Because they’re silly and don’t know anything about software development. It’s been known for ages that the main team works on new gens and that smaller secondary teams are created to work on remakes and third versions using the established engine the main team made. At least until gen 6, the main team developed XY, ORAS and SM back to back which left all of them feeling rushed and incomplete, with USUM being developed by the smallest side team yet. Hopefully they’ve had enough time to get the first gen 8 game up to snuff, they’ve got brand new hardware and an extra year of dev time on top of what they got for 7.

They ever confirm how long the veterans spent on SM? 'Cause it shouldn't have taken till near the end of development to think of a gym replacement with the full studio working on it. And given the way Gen VII turned out, feels like the most senior staff abandoned ship to start working on the Switch and others joined as soon as it was feasible.

You moron it occurred to all of us. We all know they work on multiple games in parallel, doesn’t mean they’ve put in huge resources while SM/USUM were their focus.

Not him but a lot of stuff clearly felt slapped together like it was done at the last minute, not to mention all the inaccessible map areas. They clearly meant for their to be more to do and some of the stuff that did make it into the game lacked polish, like there was changes made late in development to cover up features or events that weren’t finished before the deadline.

One of the developers straight up said in an interview that the trials were rushed together at the last minute by one person. Clearly there were time issues, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that the games weren’t done at release.

SM development time was probably spent mostly on concepts that are totally removed from the games proper but seen in concept art, like the Blastoise fire trucks.

There is no universe where they work on a new generation in the middle of making the current generation. Third versions and remakes can be developed simultaneously with other games, but new gens are their most important projects that get all the focus of their main team.

I think having 3D models and battlefields for Pokemon is fine, but if crafting the world itself is such a time sink, they ought to hire more staff or go back to the simplistic 3D of Gens 4 / 5. 'Course, you've set graphical expectations too high by now.

They were probably trying to be on Switch in the first place and then they or Nintendo got paranoid and forced it back to 3DS which would've fucked most of the developmen time.

There are many hints throughout the games that they weren't intended to be on the 3DS.

Take the Rotom Dex, for example... What wide, single screen tablet is there in the 3DS family? None, but that's what precisely what the Switch is and they've always based the Dex on the system it was on.

Another example is the communications shit. It's possible they made them more useless to get us used to the transition when they went back to a single screen... But it's just as possible it was meant to be on that single screen and that's why the bottom screen is so useless/annoying in Gen 7 - more rushing to make it make sense on the 3DS.
