There are fucking fan games (only a select few, of course) with more creative and smart ideas going into them, and that's with way less or no money. Whether you want to criticize them for removing good features with every single entry (following mons, Gen 6 bottom screen features, secret bases), not developing any idea or feature past a game or two, not having hardly any decent writers, making absolutely idiotic decisions in Pokemon distribution whether it be by location level or type (especially glaring at GS and DP), constantly mistyping Pokemon even when unused combinations would have been fitting, refusing to retcon or simplify ridiculous evolution methods, providing any kind of decent postgame besides competitive battle grinding (at best), limiting player freedom with really dumb "features" (why not rename Pokemon in team menu, why make it impossible to rename trades, why not allow moves to be deleted on the fly, why not allow more customization, etc.).... you could go on for a while. They're just plain mediocre and holding Pokemon back. But what kills me the most is that if Gamefreak just consistently included, kept, and slightly developed every good feature they've ever had (and also not make common sense mistakes), we'd actually have pretty decent games.
