Gryffins are cooler, because they're fierce, whereas Hippogriffs are said to be relatively tame. I guess whether you like the horse or lion backside is just a matter of preference.
Pokémon has (mostly) steered clear of making creatures that are direct translations of classic Greek myths, in favor of being a bit more original. The closest we ever get to a Gryffin might just end up being Silvally.
Shame it doesn't have weird chimera wings, but I guess Silvally's design didn't really need them. That's usually half the fun to a chimeral creatures though! You can have additional limbs, multiple heads, asymmetrical bodies....
