Why does /vp/ claim that DP were the worst gen starting games and that BW were the best gen starting games?
DP were slow and faulty, but they were the only starting games that gave important NPC pokemon held items.

I don't want to have a lengthy arguement but to me personally, gen 4 was extremely boring, frustrating, and unfulfilling, while gen v ranks among my favorite games, even outside of Pokémon. I fully intend to challenge my opinions about them one day, but for now that's my opinion.

these opinions can't really outweigh DP having better movesets, held items and better pokemon to battle against, though
DP also had the VS seeker, which felt more useful than Audino patches imo

also, interesting how /vp/'s favorite way to shit on XY is to point out how terrible the rivals (tierno's terrible team on the bridge) and gym leader rematches were, but when it comes to BW the constantly shitty battles don't count

I can play Platinum, and DP/Emerald to an extent and be satisfied.
Nothing wrong with wanting a good battle experience in the main games just because BW and XY failed to deliver.
What was BW's selling point other than not allowing me to catch Zubat/Pikachu before the credits?

And the selling point is that it actually sets itself up for a genuine narrative. It had an actually unironically good story, and not just for a Pokémon game. If it were a different JRPG, then it would have become a cult classic, imo (and I think the fact that it was Pokémon actually held it back somewhat because of all the morons upset that you can't catch your "bro" for the 5th time)

Also you're the only one bringing XY up, I hate XY almost as much as DPPt.

I assume you meant subjective for the first thing. If so, true, and that's fine, but the game design was really good imo too, and I feel that if you look at it from an objective standpoint gen V did a better job at that as well, giving at most a concession of it being simpler.

No, I would not consider Pokemon battles to be the whole point and in the case that I did then my interest would be shifted towards postgame facilities, online battling or showdown. Main game would be nothing more than an obstacle to reach that point for me. Before addressing that, however, I'd like to note that even if in theory Sinnoh's battles are well designed it is unpleasant in practice as a result of the game's poor engine. It's low-hanging fruit, but it's true - Gen 4 is slow. I understand that the webm related is a very extreme example but that does not make it acceptable by any means. When I use an attack I want to feel the power behind it but pauses between every action the game is processing and the wait for health bars to drop results in a disjointed feeling - like input delay in an online game.
Going on to what makes a game: the region, Pokemon within it, worldbuilding and music are all just as important towards crafting an enjoyable experience and DPPt failed to deliver in all those categories for me. As a region, it was dull. I'd like to tell you what I disliked specifically about it but I'll be frank and say I remember nothing past the cycling route or the overabundance of HMs. From what I do remember, the only area I enjoyed was the section of Wayward Cave with Gible as that was a good reward for exploration, but that fondness is heavily offset by the terrible design present in the rest of Wayward cave. This is of course without going into how moving around is somehow very airy.

The new Pokemon were not that exciting a thing for several reasons; a sizable selection was dedicated towards cross-gen evolutions (some of which were not actually available in DP), though while fine on its own is exaggerated by the decision to also include a sizable selection of mythicals and legendaries; the amount of designs introduced was not enough to support these hefty portions; a lot of Pokemon were placed behind tedious, unsatisfying mechanics such as honey trees or the marsh RNG and a few more were made difficult to use - namely the weather reliant ones such Cherrim, Hippowdown and Abomasnow (two of which are also locked behind aforementioned poor mechanics). There's a reason that DP teams all looked the same and incentive to explore for these Pokemon was very much minimal as a result of the circumstances. In terms of worldbuilding, I feel that Sinnoh was actually deconstructive as the new lore presented to us where very much jumping the land shark and NPCs did not actually feel like living people but more so extreme caricatures in line with the "hip and cool" nature Gen 4 games aimed for in general. Lastly, as music is a very personal and subjective topic, I'll just keep it clean and say I didn't like most of the music - there were some interesting melodies but the soundfont is too soft so I didn't feel any impact to anything outside of the Lake theme and Cynthia's non-battle theme.
All in all the main basic thing that DPPt lack for me is weight which just so happens to be the thing I consider most important in having fun with a game. Nothing in it feels heavy so my interest drifts rather quickly and, as I said before, it causes me to lose all motivation towards playing the game.
