So is this any good? I want to replay silver and I remember people on this board hating on the remakes.

No nostalgiafags, is SS fine or is silver really better? I haven't played a pokemon game since diamond, and I think fire red is superior to the original red in every way

Yes, you can and there are some RomHack variants for it if that's your thing. Most of the hate HGSS gets is from people who are against the remakes as a whole; for a 2009 DS era title it's well worth the playthrough.

I really enjoyed it and if you've not played G/S/C for a while it'll be even better. They also add crystal content to both versions instead of omitting it like ORAS did with Emerald.

Also: if you're looking at buying this, or any other DS era titles, I'd highly recommend a flashcart.

It has a removable micro-SD on the back of the DS cartridge that you can connect to a PC using a usb reader. Then just add whatever ROMs you want and you can play them on your DS.

The one I got was a 3in1 with an N64 and a SNES emulator on it as well.

I played gold my entire childhood, so for me HGSS are the best games of the series for the nostalgia feeling and all the great new features it has.

Plus: The pokewalker is a really nice thing, I felt I was playing the game during the whole day, literally imerse on it all the time.

I didn't like it, but i didn't like original silver either. It doesn't fix most of the issues, such as shit lvl scaling, but it's overall better than silver.

It kinda expensive these days and there are a few knockoff out there.You can emulate it just fine with one of these options

-A flashcart(way less then the game,best option)
-TWLoader(free,slow af though)
-Desmume auto builds(for pc)
-Drastic(costs money but is good mobile one)

I wouldn't say it's super retarded. HGSS have notable emulation issues because of their anti-piracy stuff. It's pretty easy to get around, but the Pokemon games have given emulators quite a bit of trouble compared to other titles.

I'm playing Gen 2 for the first time right now, on Crystal, and it's excellent.
I do feel like Johto is kind of small though.
I'm only up to Ecruteak right now, but things have been a bit formulaic so far: town -> route with 4-5 trainers -> ilex forest/dark cave/day care/national park -> route with 4-5 trainers -> town.
Kanto felt a bit more wild and unpredictable and I felt like I could sequence break things pretty easily, but the gameplay of Crystal itself is still great.
The events based on the time and date are awesome, held items, animated portraits, the radio stuff, it's all pretty impressive for a GBC game and I'm very excited to keep playing.
I just hope the 2nd half of Johto is a bit more diverse.

It kind of goes in the complete opposite direction of what you're experiencing desu. Once you get to Ecruteak, the world opens up a bit, and once you get the Gym Badge, the order you do 5-7 is entirely up to you. However, the level scaling gets completely fucked because they have to account for people going to gym 7 immediately after gym 4. This means that the nex 2-4 hours of gametime is giong to feel like you're making little progress outside of exploring and finding new mons. There's some more backtracking after Gym 7 as well.

Shit. I never realized how the photos would be such a great way to track how far you've come. I always just thought they were just some cute gimmicky thing to say they included in the game. They really did think hard about how hard they wanted to hit nostalgiafags with HGSS. I can't believe I was too much of a brainlet to recognize the value of those photo moments.

At this point of the game you can choose which path to take, Johto seems small at first yes but each location has something to keep you busy, even the open sea with the whirl islands and the caves are pretty big if you're into that. If you want an early challenge, go towards Olivine and head for the battle tower, your worth as a trainer will be tested there.

Sounds fun.
I've definitely appreciated that each town so far has had something fun to do, like Sprout Tower, the Underground Mall, Radio Tower, fighting the Kimono Dancers.
It's pretty great and keeps the towns memorable.
My main concern was the world exploration, but I'm glad it's going to open up now.

It's the worst way to play Gold and Silver. Get Crystal for the superior experience, HGSS is legitimately one of the worst games in the series and is propped up solely by Sinnohfetus nostalgia. It's slower, uglier and full of gimmicks instead of any actual new gameplay features.
