Heart Gold comes out and they make a ton of stupid design decisions, they change things that might have offered some small improvement over the old way but really didn't need to be changed because it was never really an issue (i.e. the Kimono Girls), but then they DON'T change important things that were responsible for glaring issues throughout the game. For example, there is no fucking good reason for the ghost type gym to STILL be filled with not a single pokemon except Ghastly and its evolutions.
Black and White comes out, and as much effort as they may have put into animating the sprites, it looks like fucking shit. It brought back the backsprite resolution issue that hadn't been seen since Gen 1. They did some other things right with it, but after feeling kind of burned from Platinum clearly being a better buy than either Diamond or Pearl, and beginning to notice a clear pattern, I chose to wait for the third version. Then they released B2W2, and I was like "Well I guess I'm not buying anything, then."
X&Y come out and their implementation of 3D graphics may have been flawed, but it was definitely the right idea over Gen 5's idea. They put it mega evolutions but did it completely wrong. Pokemon like Lucario, Gyarados, and Garchomp should NEVER have gotten mega evolutions. These mega evolutions might not have actually been stronger than the non-mega pokemon, but there was clearly an intent to make them stronger through the mega evolutions. These pokemon did not have any need to be stronger.
