First of all: There are three versions. Each is representative of the final evolutions of the fire, water, and grass starters. And I know that because I'm supposed to post a picture of the official art for the babies tonight.

That's also why Pokemon are in the overworld. You trigger battles by walking up to them, then there's a gen 2 style screen transition then you're fighting. It's like approaching a trainer now.
And speaking of trainers, every trainer is made from the in game character customizer. It's really, really in depth this time. You can expect the level of character diversity you got in older games, trust me.
