But they've made so many animations for every pokemon including all the amie animations and what they do when they get hit plus them all running and walking. They should never throw all those animations away.

Gamefreak's always been lazy as shit in regards to innovating the overworld of main games. It's been the same shit for 5 generations with slight variations and then they hopped on the 3D meme and it was mostly ugly and costly for overall amount of content within games. Side games have way better 2D and 3D styles and overworlds but Gamefreak is far too braindead to emulate them in core games.

The fact of the matter is that character movement took place in a 2d grid. The other fact of the matter is that the pokemon were 2d sprites.

No. The Pokemon yeah but their textures and generally the overworld are pretty meh. Pokemon games always look a gen behind in whatever system they're on. I'd argue about battle animations flowing better than many other RPG franchises, though.

A game being 2D or 3D isn't determined by how you move you dumb waifufag. There's no "what" and "if"s, the world is 3D and that's it, period. Disgaea has been a 3D game since its creation yet you see no one arguing against that despite the focus of it being the awesome 2D sprites.

3D can obviously look good, but GF really squandered its potential. They don't even use a lot of the animations they put in the game. Pokemon Stadium battles had more character and oompf to them than XY and S&M.

Not to mention the color palettes... The old games had limited palettes, but that forced the environments to have more flow in the color. If they could do that with the 3D environments they would look twice as better.
