Maybe Gamefreak is just indecisive, or they only delete your shit if your NNID is completely inactive for a while, but it would be incredibly retarded and greedy to delete people's pokemon after a month, when gamefreak doesn't even send out warning emails or reminders. Tons of casuals probably bought XY, bought a subscription, but forgot after a year and then wanted to resubscribe with ORAS or SM or whatever, only to find their pokemon gone. The extremely small amount of money it would cost to keep a dozen pokemon saved on a hard drive isn't worth the customer support when people call complaining or trying to get the pokemon back
