I think their current situation is they were aiming for Oct/Nov 2018 but need to wait until (a) they are sure they can make it, and (b) they have something impressive to show.

I'm not a patternfag in the slightest, but given that the only time there was less than 6 years between Smash entries was between the first and second instalments, 2019-2020 looks FAR more likely for a new iteration of Smash than sooner. BW was announced in April
XY was announced in January (with a trailer/starters/legendaries) but then only a new Eeeveelution/Mewtwo form until May, where news picked up significantly
SM were revealed in February and we had nothing but names and logos until, you guessed it, May
I don't think 2018 is a sure thing, but I wouldn't rule it out unless we hit May and don't have an announcement by then

Smash gets a much longer hype period than Pokemon. For it to come out this year it would've had to have been announced late last year. Second half of this year is for Pokemon and maybe a small surprise like animal crossing

These, more or less. There's past evidence for it to be entirely possible for them to announce. market, and release the game within the year supposing it was announced no later than May. That said, if the above doesn't happen and it's not at E3, expect ~March 2019.
