I don't think its a pokemon fan thing, this is hype culture in general, "gamers" have been taught to blow over every little detail that could imply new products since it's like they're doing the marketing job for the company, so when they do something that ultimately leads to very little, people still feel as if there's got to be more to it. In a way, it's pavlovian, the second we see anything slightly off, everyone assumes it's a new game or something huge.
