Decidueye isn't fighting dirty. There's nothing dirty about being a long range fighter.

Greninja is Dark type because it's a ninja. Ninjas are about being sneaky.

Incineroar is Dark type because it's a Heel. Heels are all about being brutal or dirty fighters.

There's nothing dirty, sneaky, or brutal about Decidueye.

That's pretty much it. Decidueye has shadow-related powers, so it's a Ghost type.

People were speculating it would be ghost since the TCG set names were leaked, before the final forms were revealed. And given both its pre-evolutions and the Hoothoot line it would make sense to assume flying.

Grass/Flying
Fire/Dark
Water/Fairy

For the starters prior to reveal. 2/3 ain't bad, but there's nothin you could do to put together Ghost typing for Decidueye based on design alone.

The only hint for the Ghost typing was "Hollow Hunt" on the card deck the morning before it was revealed, which I was admittedly suspicious about when I first read it.

This, they just worked around this with Dhelmise by giving it the Steelworker ability.

If Pokemon could have three types, then Dhelmise would be Ghost/Grass/Steel, and Decidueye would be Grass/Flying/Ghost.
