Winning the league isn't even that big of an accomplishment in universe. Virgil and his team of Eevee barely won against the guy Ash beat over 60 episodes before. Tyson, the guy who narrowly beat Ash in the Hoenn League, won two more times. Ash was so close to beating Alain.
But a character in the anime that can actually capture and train Legendary/Mythical Pokemon is pretty impressive. Ash never lost a full battle this badly before (2-6); even his fight with Cameron was 4-6.
