Most of these people have the villain they ship the protag with as their husbando and reduce the PC to a blank no-character, a faceless dude or a shoujo heroine making it more obvious.
Unless it's western fanart because self-insert is not a thing as much over here, and people are too worried about pedophilia, those ships hardly get content on this side. People would rather make their own OC that may or may not be based on the PC.
Probably the only ship where people hardly self-insert into is Hilbert/N, fanartists threat it like most people threat ships, like something to admire from afar which makes a funny contrast with Hilda/N shippers drawing all these disney fantasies.
