Avoid rare candies for pokemon under level 100 if you want to be "perfect" though. Grind lots against bullshit weak pokemon for best results.
Honestly though, the stats from vitamins and the nice front load of stat exp from a few dozen zubat is probably enough for the base game.
FYI, Starmie and Taurous are very nice pokemon for every cup they can participate in, dragon rage breaks the low-level cups, and dupe the good TMs.
