Just from a cover standpoint the names and cover Pokemon weren't very appealing.

2010 was also a very rocky political year in the US, I've always wondered if that attributed to it as well. Lot of racial tension.

They came out near the end of the DS' life cycle, BW2 especially, since I think people were expecting 3ds games at that point.
For comparison, DP came out around the halfway point of the DS' life and was the first Pokemon game on the DS, hence why it sold so well.

Also has one of the dumbest sprites ever. There was clearly a massive miscommunication or lack of communication between whoever designed Ferroseed and whoever did Ferroseed's sprite and animations.

There's zero reason for it to be spinning. Whoever did the sprite must have looked at it and thought it resembled a top so he made it spin. Even though it's never said anywhere in any of its descriptions that it spins around like that. It also doesn't learn Rapid Spin. The XY model corrected this by just having it embed its spikes into the ground and stay still, which matches its Pokedex description.

In terms of sales it's Gen 1 > Gen 2 > Gen 4 > Gen 3 > Gen 6 > Gen 7 > Gen 5. But really everything after Gen 2 sold around 16 million so it's not that big of a deal after Gen 2.

By this graphic, it looks like BW is the more balanced in terms of demography, since it does somewhat well the same with players of all ages, while DP was literally a children party.

The biggest problem, the 3DS was announced before BW was even released in Japan. It was unfortunate timing.
>Marketing
BW was more of a casual reboot and polishing of the franchise up until this point. It's the only generation that did not have something "exciting" to market towards new players and children. This left the reboot as its sole advertisement which was a polarizing change.
>Piracy
DS piracy was too strong at the time. Several games took a hit around that time period.
