SM relies heavily on the SoL aspects the develop the characters and stories of the main cast and plot. As such people like myself would classify it as an SoL even though SM has some small plot arcs around it, the most intensive being that of Nebby. Now let's take that example and further dissect it. Lillie also plays a major part in it, but she didn't develop over an arc of her own. Instead her episodes were laid out sporadically ever since the introduction of Vulpix, and you can see her development in the background as the show emulates a more relaxed pace than other seasons. She very gradually gets over her fear of pokemon (until Silvally comes in but that's around the Nebby arc anyways). Another example is the Akala Island arc, where Rockruff evolves, Ash battles Olivia, Kiawe catches Marowak, etc. This could also be evidence against the "SoL" argument but because these events have been built up in previous episodes it could also be said that it's just a bunch of independent events coming to their conclusions. In a way it's much like how events in real life unfold: gradually until we notice them taking form. So there you have it. "Slice of Life" in the pokemon universe still means you have battles, because battling is part of a trainer's life. However unlike other seasons it doesn't shy away from having fun episodes about more ordinary things that would've seemed forced and contrived in older seasons (largely due to the need to shove Ash in every character of the day's story)
