Short of grinding for months or NG+, there is no way to reliably beat Minotaur if he gets even a little bit lucky. No selection of demons or skills allow you to survive in the face of getting some bad luck.

To a small extent, this is also true for Whitney: Clefairy could Hydro Pump your Geodude, or Miltank could get continuous flinches, but these just aren't the same odds. Geodude or Machop trivialize the fight, let alone if you have both. There's nothing stopping you from getting something with Poisonpowder and heal-stalling her either.

No, it literally is a meme. I have never had a problem beating Miltank with Quilava. Rollout does basically nothing--and by the time it actually starts doing damage, Miltank has already fainted.

It's pretty clear that everyone just really sucks at Pokémon and feels the need to blame it on a pretty easy gym leader, barring BS Metronome rolls.

Whitney's Miltank isn't really a roadblock, but it can get a cheesy win or two the first times you fight it because not only it has the largest amount of stats of any mon you face up until now but it also uses three moves you never once see before in the game so Rollout's damage can be deceptive if you let it build up, Attract will fuck you up if you don't have a female party member and while Stomp is not a new move, it can flinch hax you in conjunction with Attract and Miltank's deceptively high speed. Also Milk Drink can recover any chip damage you deal on it with weaker mons. The Clefairy before it can also get a big attack and ravage your starter or another good Pokemon on your team making it harder for you to beat Miltank.

Gastly uses Hypnosis to put Miltank to sleep, Sandshrew suicides itself with sand attacks to lower her accuracy by a lot, Gastly uses Hypnosis again and Croconaw beats Miltank down.

Fuck Milk Drink, though. I can't count the times I had Miltank on the last bit of HP, asleep, just for her to wake up and use this fucking move.

Back when this was a new game the good counters where gen 1s which you'd avoid in favor of all the new ones. Unless you encounter an old favorite you really do want to try out the new ones in a new pokémon game.
There where still ways around it like a Hoothoot with Hypnosis to break the Rollout combo as long as your luck wasn't terrible.

If anything, it would be easier for a child, because unlike a lot of people here, a child wouldn't care if something is "cheap", such as using that Machop and Onix you can get by then instead of stubbornly sticking to just their "bros". That's what I did the first time I beat this game. And the next time I used an Eevee with Sand Attack, so the debuff strategies really aren't that complex either. Maybe you were just a particularly dumb child.

A child wouldn't autistically research what the gym leader's type was and then talk to every npc in the city in order to get a trade effective against it. They would challenge the gym as it is, get cheesed by Attract+Stomp/Rollout and then try again later this time more aware of what the Gym Leader is bringing.

Pretty sure they tell you that she's a normal type user before you fight her. And I didn't go around searching for NPCs to give me the right pokemon. I just talked to every NPC because that's what you do in this kind of game. Plus, even if you get beaten the first time, you'd easily beat her the second time unless you're an idiot. Of course you wouldn't know that lowering her accuracy would be so effective unless you knew about Rollout, but that doesn't mean that the fight was hard when it's so easy to counter.

I still always try and catch female versions of pokemon when I can just because of how much attract triggered me the first time I was raped by it.

I didn't actually learn you could teach attract to a male pokemon until years later despite abusing it heavily all through gen 2. I feel like every trainer pokemon is male for some reason.

Chucks poliwrath was a legit nightmare though. I got traumatized and lost navigating whirl islands and didn't want to surf back to olivine because I thought the route was a lot longer than it was, but there was nothing to grind against but tentacruels. I only squeezed by with attract cheese after like 2 weeks of struggle.
