High sales means that something went right despite its flaws. Low sales means that something just went wrong, and its usually multiple things not referring to the games themselves.
But Gen 5...Gen 5 makes sense.

Gen 5 was at the tail end of the DS life cycle, literally a year before the 3DS would be released. I'd say that'd be a reason it didn't sell well. Besides, it still sold quite a bit. There's a reason that it didn't sell as much as others, and many of the reasons are usually because of the new story and Pokemon that turned so many off.
