Give me one reason why this isn't the best pokemon game ever.

I mean if you look at them at the time they came in, they're all excellent, especially since stats didn't really mean shit at the time either. You had a brachiosaur, the only mammal which was wolverine-like, and a crocodilian. They were great options.

by good starters I mean in design. People still remember cyndaquil, totadile and chikorita. Nobody remembers popplio, chespin or snivy

The graphics are really, really ugly. At least gen 2's pixel minimalism is somewhat redeemed by having a decent style and leaving it up to the player's imagination. Gen 4's overworld is just hideous. I admire anyone who is fortunate enough not to think so because I'd like to enjoy remade Johto, but I find it so ugly that it hurts to look at.

At least it fixed this over the originals.

Definitely. Johto is still a poorly-designed mess of a region in terms of level scaling, but they made Kanto actually playable.
