They should just copy Xenoblade's battle system. Still keeps the turn-based illusion, while also giving you those moments where the framerate gets destroyed by the amount of cool shit you're doing.

Well that's the point, it gives the illusion without actually being that different from a standard turn-based game. There are hitboxes though for side and back attacks, and AoE. So there is positioning involved there.
