Of all the pokemon TR has why has Wobbufett been around for so long?

Other than it's crazy powerful mirror coat and Counter attack that is proven a useful and annihilating Ash's Pokemon in the past. Jesse is just too stupid to know how to use it

It was voted back into the show via a fan poll. They had a poll near the end of BW asking which one of Team Rocket's old Pokemon they'd most like to return, and Wobbuffet was the winner.

By the time the Johto journey had begun, Team Rocket had grown a bit stale and blasting them off every episode was just status quo.

I guess the writers tried to shake things up a bit by giving them a literal punching bag in Pokémon form since that's what they were themselves.

There's also the Japanese play on Wobbufett's name which pretty much makes it sound like he's just always agreeing with whatever Jessie, James and Meowth are talking about. I guess it makes more sense to the Japanese audience and their unique....brand of humor.

To be honest, how many of them had any characterization?

Arbok and Weezing had none and even in the giant Pokemon island they were pretty generic

Victreebell was pretty cool though

I almost forgot to put in Licktung

Wobbuffet is GOAT

Seviper was memorable in its first episode but after was just an Arbok clon

Cacnea just repeated the Victreebell joke

Mime Jr and Chimecho were okay

The BW ones were utterly forgetable

Gourgeist and Inkay were overall the best ones

Mimikyu and squid are good too.

Hell, in Misty Mermaid, Arbok went from bumbling buffoon to a fucking slasher villain underwater, and apparently, didn't need to breath.

Koffing and Ekans were just so loyal they'd follow Jessie and James to the ends of the world at the risk of their life.

Wobbuffet is funny, charming, and actually dangerous. His presence on BW and TR elevated the Rockets to a threat Ash had to pay attention to instead of ignore.
J+J's other Pokemon were more threatening in Kanto, when Victreebel, Arbok, Weezing were evolved while most of Ash's Pokemon weren't, so they appeared powerful and threatening. That's been less so in later seasons when Ash got more competent.

Their main problem was debuting in Kanto and being removed by Johto, when characterization of Pokemon wasn't a big focus. Weezing had a ton of utility and comedy potential, since he's a floating, poisonous smoke bomb. Meanwhile Arbok is a natural predator of most of Ash's Pokemon who are often dogs, cats, rodents or birds.

I'm honestly surprised Arbok/Weezing have never been revisited in 15 years since their release in 2003. I understand they would never return to their roster...but they didn't get to ever see them again. They're their original pokemon.

I know they're supposed to still be in Hoenn somewhere, but who knows, maybe the pokemon hitched a ride with a ranch person or professor or something and TR's Arbok/Weezing came along

Victreebel's gimmick of biting James was actually a lot more impactful in the dub.
I remember rumors circulating back in 2000 that 4Kids censored that James appeared to steal the Victreebel, and it was always biting him because it was a stolen Pokemon. We never saw James capture a Weepinbel on screen and the flashback was edited out, so "my Weepinbel evolved!" seemed like an obvious dub cover up.

I think Mimikyu and Mareanie are legitimately the best ones they've ever had in terms of character. I wish there were more episodes about Jessie and James having bonding moments with them.

Also, Wobbuffet needs an episode for himself, it's been years since he had one.

Doubtful. Like Hoenn, he's building bonds with all his Alola team so I don't think he'll bring anyone else back, unless there's some kind of requirement for it like needing firepower to beat Necrozma-U.

It was good for the fanservice but as his Pokemon collection grew it would make it harder without compromising the characterization of the new team. His XY team was probably the most characterized since OS and I don't think it would have worked if you had to squeeze Charizard, Sceptile or Infernape in there.

Seviper was in the anime for literally 400 episodes. It was caught around the 8th Hoenn ep and lasted all the way to DP191. It's one of Jessie's longest lasting pokemon outside of Wobbufett
