Okay I just bought Pearl.
Sinnoh is the only region I haven't beaten and the last time I played this game was 10 fucking years ago, and I don't even remember getting to the second gym.

Platinum is better, but Pearl is a fun time and as long as you don't mind the generally slower battles you'll enjoy it just fine.

HMs are everywhere. It's slow at times, but the music is great and most of the locations are comfy, particularly the snow routes (which maximize both comfort AND slowness). I truly don't think DP would be as disliked as they are if Platinum didn't exist. Platinum may be significantly better, but they're perfectly good on their own as well. You'll have fun. Enjoy the experience for what it is.
