No. It wasn't perfect, but it was sure as shit better than everything that followed it. And the setting was cool.
Also you're ignoring RSE, considered by some to be the best games in the series.

I wouldn't say this tho. In retrospect, they all seem flawed to a certain degree, but at their time they were well received. RS were overdid by Emerald, DP by HGSS, Pt and Gen V, XY by ORAS and Gen VII.

Can you spot a pattern? Every game was better than the previous one and that's the most important thing for a franchise like Pokémon.

I'm being a realist, Game Freak have always had to make concessions to get games running on the hardware and they've always had esoteric working environments. With Switch not just being more powerful but being easier to develop for than any previous Nintendo hardware, I can't help but think they'll have a decent return this time out.
